Project: 19 Blue Strongholds (19 Blå Støttepunkter)

Project description: Beautiful and functional facilities - 19 Blue Strongholds

Short description

Naturturisme I/S has developed a modern and architectural and innovative concept for strongholds: The Archipelago Shelters. In cooperation with local landowners, different types of shelters, lunch box houses, toilets and kayak houses have been created on 19 coastal and scenic localities in Det Sydfynske Øhav (The South Funen Archipelago). The facilities have been designed in cooperation with outdoorpeople – for outdoorpeople – and are to function as strongholds for maritime outdoor experiences. The Archipelago Shelters are accustomed the local nature and placed on both private and public areas

Background and Purpose

The Archipelago Shelters have the purpose of supporting the unique recreational options that Det Sydfynske Øhav provides for locals and tourists. A central baseline for the project has been that the joys of outdoor living can and should be enjoyed throughout the year.  This is why The Archipelago Shelters are designed to also offer shelter in the outer seasons. The strongholds are placed near the coast and therefore they also prop up the maritime outdoor activities.  At no time have considerations regarding nature, aesthetics functionality and quality been compromised in choice of material and design.

Possibilities and Advantages

The Archipelago Shelters makes it possible to expand the outdoor season in favour of guests and the South Funen operators who offer coastal outdoor products. The project has set new standards for what outdoor facilities should be capable of and how it should look, and The Archipelago Shelters have aroused interest in the outdoor environment both nationally and internationally. The Guardian wrote a great article about the new state-of-the-art shelters in 2015.

Collaborators

The new shelters are developed in cooperation with local outdoorpeople, LoA and the four municipalities on South Funen, and the first sketches were made Praksis Arkitekter. The final projecting was done by LUMO Arkitekter.

The shelters on private land are operated by the landowners. Bookings of The Archipelago Shelters are administrated from Trente Mill (Trente Mølle).
